Jonathan Castro

Graphic designer, art director, and multidisciplinary artist

Jonathan Castro is a graphic designer, art director, and multidisciplinary artist working across visual identity, sound, moving image, live performance. Based in Rotterdam, his work operates at the intersection of art, design, and contemporary culture, exploring how collected materials, archives, and experimental systems can be assembled and reassembled into new visual languages and experiences.

He has collaborated with international clients including Adidas, Nike, Nike House of Innovation (Shanghai), Burberry, 032c, Edwin Europe, Hypebeast China, and Randomevent. His work with fashion brands has included the development of graphics and visual systems for capsule collections in Europe and Asia.

Alongside his commercial and cultural work, Jonathan maintains an artistic practice that moves between the real and the fictive, engaging with themes of memory, traces, infrastructure, sound, and material translation through installation, video, performance, and publishing.

His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions and platforms including the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), Haus der Statistik (Berlin), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Lima), Typojanchi (Seoul), Mayrit Bienal (Madrid), KV Leipzig, Nieuw Instituut (Rotterdam), Crone Gallery (Vienna), Vitrine Gallery (Basel), SSENSE (Montreal), and Nike House of Innovation (Shanghai).

As a designer, he has also collaborated with design studios as well as with artists, festivals, and record labels within electronic and experimental music scenes. Since 2023, Jonathan has been working as Art Director for Dekmantel Festival in Amsterdam.

Artist in residence at the Jan van Eyck Academie in 2019 and hold an MFA from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam.
